Go ahead: Just try to think of a card game more riveting than one that puts Darth Vader and Miss Jane Pittman head-to-head. Stage and screen icons James Earl Jones and Cicely Tyson headline D.L. Coburn’s The Gin Game, which opens officially on October 14. The revival, directed by Leonard Foglia, will play the Golden Theatre through January 10, 2016.
In honor of the play’s big night, Broadway.com resident artist Justin “Squigs” Robertson created this portrait of the two theatrical legends in action. Check out Jones as Weller and Tyson as Fonsia, complete with a killer hand.
Congratulations to the Gin Game team! We’d wish you luck, but we know that’s hardly needed. Especially for Fonsia.
About the Artist: With a desire to celebrate the magic of live theater and those who create it, and with a deep reverence for such touchstones as the work of Al Hirschfeld and the wall at Sardi’s, Squigs is happy and grateful to be among those carrying on the traditions where theater and caricature meet. He was born and raised in Oregon, lived in Los Angeles for quite a long time and now calls New York City his home.
